“The Eucharist, although it is the fullness of sacramental life, is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.” (Pope Francis, Joy of the Gospel, 47)

“When my teacher prepared me to receive my first Holy Communion, she instilled in my young heart a reverence for receiving the Eucharist. I was to keep my eyes lowered and not look around, focusing totally on Jesus. While I still value this, I also find another approach to be equally inspiring. It also draws me into union with the Holy One. Before or after receiving the Eucharist, I look with love at those in the communion line. I marvel at the variety of people moving forward–each one beloved of God. I look at the diversity of faces, the varied shapes of body, the colors of clothing and diverse manner of walking. I think, “We are the Body of Christ. We are united in our reception of the Eucharist. No matter how different we appear on the surface, this One Great Love gathers us into an unbroken unity. I pray to remember this when I leave here today.” (Sr. Joyce Rupp, Living Faith, 9/13/14)
