THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS)
I like very much this image of eternal life which Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, the Archbishop of Chicago, shared in his beautiful last will and testament, The Gift of Peace, a book he completed just a couple days before he died on November 14, 1996.
“When one young man asked if I look forward to being united to God and all those who have gone before me, I made this connection. The first time I traveled with my mother and sister to my parents’ homeland of Tonadico de Primiero, in northern Italy, I felt as if I had been there before. After years of looking through my mother’s photo albums, I knew the mountains, the land, the houses, and the people. As soon as I entered the valley, I said, My God, I know this place. I am home.” Somehow I think crossing from this life into eternal life will be similar. I will be home.”
Eternal rest grant upon our dear loved ones who have died! May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace! Amen!
