July 12: Day by Day with Father Bill

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gardeners are dreamers who seek Eden. They hope that a plot of land, properly cared for, will reap great rewards and become a center of harmony in the middle of daily struggles. Many gardeners vaguely realize, too, that they are involved in a spiritual enterprise. Binding themselves to soil, seed, and growth, they uncover the soul’s own hidden process and engage a mysterious rhythm. The success of the garden is less important than the renewal of life – this is the primary source of delight.(from a favorite of mine, Garden Prayers: Planting the Seeds of Your Inner Life by Wayne Simic)

And from the pen of Wendell Berry:

Sowing the seed,
my hand is one with the earth.
Wanting the seed to grow,
my mind is one with the light.
Hoeing the crop,
my hands are one with the rain.
Having cared for the plants,
my mind is one with the air.
Hungry and trusting,
y mind is one with the earth.
Eating the fruit,
my body is one with the earth.

HAPPY SUNDAY!

HAPPY GARDENING!
